Barbara was born in Wellington in 1961. She travelled extensively in Africa, Australia, Europe and North America before gaining her Certificate and Diploma in Craft Design at Nelson Polytechnic in 1989. She operated an Access Jewellery Workshop in Nelson and is the recipient of a QEII Arts Council Grant and Regional Award.
Barbara is fascinated with the inherent human need to record. In her works, she has used a series of personal marks drawn from experiences of her childhood, gender issues and travels. Although these marks are personal, the viewer is invited to interpret them in their own way. The simple disc form that she uses relates to the indigenous adornments of Africa and the Pacific where jewellery is worn for ceremonial, ritual and spiritual purposes.
Barbara is currently based in Mapua, Nelson.
