Royal Jewellery Studio is located in Kingsland in what was once the suburban cinema, the Theatre Royal, hence our name. Fittingly the cinema was renamed the Pacific Theatre in the 1970's which nicely represents the influence of two cultures, European and Pacific, that shapes our unique sense of identity as a group of tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean. The store was established in 1998 by jeweller Ben Flynn to provide an alternate venue for contemporary New Zealand jewellery in Auckland City. We select the best studio-style jewellers working in New Zealand, with an emphasis on individuality, wearability and quality workmanship, to stock our store. All of our jewellers design and make each item themselves in small quanities, if not one at a time, according to their own aesthetics and preoccupations. Our unifying interest is that we are passionate about jewellerys ability to be a vehicle for individual expression and we value the handmade.
The store is run by brother and sister team Ben Flynn and Myfanwy Rees, with part time help from jewellers Kate Barton and Natalie Midgley. Myfanwy manages the store during the week and makes jewellery part time. Ben makes jewellery full-time from his workshop in the Bay of Islands and is in store Saturdays by appointment. In the weekend you will find Kate, full time jeweller, ablely assisted by Natalie recent jewellery graduate from Manukau Tech.
